Min Jin Lee, an award-winning fiction writer, immigrated to Queens, New York, from Seoul, South Korea, when she was just 7 years old. Her writing focuses on the intersection of race, ethnicity, immigration, class, religion, gender, and identity of diasporic people. Lee's debut novel, Free Food for Millionaires, in 2007 became a national best-seller and Netflix adapted it as a television series. Her second novel, Pachinko, published in 2017, was a finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction and named one of The New York Times' 10 best books of 2017. Former President Barack Obama chose Pachinko for his recommended reading list, calling it "a powerful story about resilience and compassion."
